What is An SSD?

August 4, 2014 By Brent Hale Leave a Comment

What is An SSD

Five to ten years ago, you didn’t have much of a choice in terms of storage for your new computer. Your only option was to use a mechanical hard drive.

However, nowadays, you have another option for storage: a Solid State Drive.

A Solid State Drive (more commonly referred to as an SSD) serves the exact same purpose as a traditional mechanical hard drive, it just uses different technology to do its job a whole lot better.

In this post, all of the builds are full builds (with exception of the O.S., monitor, keyboard, and mouse) and they include everything you need to build your system’s tower.

Also included in this budget range are a couple of options for LAN builds. So, if you’re looking for a more compact system that you can take with you to LAN parties and events, then there are some builds for you below.

New Gaming Computer Build Checklist

June 20, 2013 By Brent Hale 8 Comments

New Gaming Computer Build ChecklistThe following is a gaming computer build checklist for first-time builders to use when they’re choosing components and building their gaming computer.

This list is not set in stone and will change over time as the building process changes.

If you can think of anything a first-time builder would need, please post it in the Comment section and I will consider adding it to this list.

Also, feel free to bookmark this page, as it can be used as a solid resource for your build.

*Note – Certain items link to pages that will give you more information on that item. For instance, the Processor (CPU) link will take you to a page where you can learn all about what a processor is and what it’s function is in a gaming computer.

The Best Cheap Gaming Processors Under $100 in 2013

May 6, 2013 By Brent Hale 1 Comment

Best Gaming Processors Under $100In order to further expand on my Best Component series I am going to release another set of posts that detail multiple components within certain price ranges that are excellent options for gamers. In the next batch of posts (this being the first one), I will take a look at multiple components in a certain price range. So, instead of just choosing one processor in this post, I’m going to take a look at three of the best cheap gaming processors under $100.

Also, I’ve launched a campaign to get you, my reader and fellow system-builder, to help me stock this site with personal reviews of the individual components you have experience with. I’m paying $20 for thorough reviews.

Why am I doing this?

There’s a lot of sites that have advanced benchmark reviews that feature detailed graphics and a lot of terms first-time builders won’t understand. My goal is to help new builders read relevant reviews that are written in a manner that they can understand.

In the end, by allowing you to write reviews of your components and post them on this site, Elite Gaming Computers will not only be a great site for component reviews, but it will also be a strong and dedicated community–something I have always wanted to see this site turn into.

So, to keep this Best Component series going, today I will take a look at three of the best cheap gaming processors under $100 in 2013. In all honesty there aren’t a ton of options under $100 for a solid gaming CPU, but if you’re working with a tight budget these processors will get the job done.

Jeff’s Awesome Gaming Computer

April 13, 2013 By Brent Hale Leave a Comment

Jeff's Gaming ComputerToday I’ll be be interviewing Jeff, a modern day renaissance man, about his awesome gaming computer. How awesome is it?

Well, Jeff’s part list alone would need at least 5-6 feet of rolled up parchment paper just to contain it. And, his rig looks like something straight out of Tron. It’s sick!

Jeff is a new father, an avid gamer, a family man, a college student, and a data/voice system installer. He might as well be the 21st century Benjamin Franklin.

He does it all!

Even though Jeff has a lot on his plate, he was kind enough to answer my questions and talk a little about himself, his life, and his computer. So, I’d like to thank him for chatting with me and I hope everyone enjoys the interview!

The Best Laptops for Gaming in 2013

March 15, 2013 By Brent Hale 15 Comments

Updated May 17th, 2013

Best Laptops for Gaming 2013Typically I recommend that gamers build their own computers rather than buy them pre-built. And, I usually don’t advise that people use a laptop for gaming due to cooling issues. However, with the rise of LAN parties, and the benefits that come with gaming in the same room as your buddies, there is a real upside to having a laptop that is capable of handling your favorite games.

If you’re one of those gamers who wants to game-on-the-go, then having a solid gaming laptop is a must for you. But choosing a good gaming laptop is a lot different than choosing components for a new computer and assembling it yourself. For starters, you’re going to spend more money for less performance on a gaming laptop. That is just something you will have to sacrifice if you want the mobility of a laptop.

Also, a gaming laptop–even the high-end ones–are not going to be able to run as cool as a well-built gaming desktop. And, that means that your gaming laptop will not be as durable and will not last as long as a desktop.

So, if you can accept those two trade-offs in order to be able to take your gaming with you wherever you go, then there is nothing wrong with getting a good gaming laptop.

In this post, we will take a look at the best laptops for gaming in 2013 at various price ranges for different budget sizes. I’ve broken down the categories into five different price ranges: gaming laptops under $500, gaming laptops between $500-$750, gaming laptops between $750-$1,000, gaming laptops between $1,000-$1,500, and gaming laptops over $1,500.

I only chose one gaming laptop for each price range and while there are definitely some other worthy laptops in these price ranges, I felt these offered the best returns for PC gamers.

Should You Get a Laptop or Desktop for Gaming?

January 4, 2013 By Brent Hale Leave a Comment

gaming laptop or desktopIf you’re in the market for a new gaming computer, you’re probably trying to figure out whether you want to get a laptop or desktop for gaming.

And, since there are many reasons why you could choose one over the other, I’ve decided to lay out the pros and cons of both computer types in this article.

The one glaring difference between a laptop and a desktop is obviously mobility. Laptops can go pretty much anywhere. Desktops must stay put (for the most part.)

So, for any gamers who frequent LAN parties, or who are also using their laptop for school, or who travel a lot, then a laptop makes the most sense.

However, those are really the only reasons why you should choose a laptop over a desktop for gaming purposes. And, while it’s true that computer technology has come a long way and laptops are now more capable than ever, the desktop is still the best kind of system to game on.

In this post I’ll give the pros and cons of each system and I’ll explain why desktops are still superior to laptops in pretty much every scenario.
