If you haven’t played League of Legends yet, then you’re missing out. I was a little late to the LOL bandwagon, but now that I have arrived I’m totally hooked. This game is addicting, to say the least. And, since I love to get other people hooked on the things that I am currently hooked on (why do you think I created this site?!!?!) I’d like to take the time to write a post on how you can get a solid computer for League of Legends for pretty cheap.
Of course, you’re going to have to build your own system in order to get the most performance for the least amount of money… but with my complete computer-building guide, that should be a piece of cake. And, I know I say this a lot, but if you can operate a screwdriver and read, you are overqualified to build your own computer.
So, in this post I will give you a very affordable build ($400) that will easily max League of Legends out. But first, let’s take a look at the system requirements you’ll need to meet in order to play League of Legends…

League of Legends is not the most demanding game and, therefore, it doesn’t have insane minimum system requirements that you have to meet in order for you to play. Fortunately, this means that you can build a very budget-friendly gaming computer that will allow you to play League of Legends on max settings.
Here are the League of Legends System Requirements (minimum and recommended) as listed by Riot:
Minimum Specs for League of Legends
- 2GHz CPU
- 1GB of RAM
- 8GB available on your hard drive
- Support for DirectX v9.0 or better
Recommended Specs for League of Legends
- 3GHz CPU
- 2GB of RAM
- 12GB available on your hard drive
- GeForce 8800 or Radeon HD 5670 (or higher)
- Support for DirectX v9.0
If you’re familiar at all with PC hardware, then you’ll know obtaining even the recommended specs for playing League of Legends won’t be difficult at all. Still, there are those out there who are stuck on older laptops or desktops who are struggling to play their favorite game.
There’s also those out there who aren’t PC gamers, but who have heard of League of Legends and are looking to put together a PC that will allow them to jump into one of the most popular games ever.
For those of you who are looking to get a PC for League of Legends, the following build will allow you to max out LoL easily for about $400 (not including your operating system.) Not only that, but it will serve as a very powerful entry-level gaming PC and will allow you to play most modern games on medium-to-higher settings.

Build a Gaming PC for League of Legends for Under $400
What follows is a list of parts that you can buy that, when assembled, will allow you to max out League of Legends (and most other games, as well) for about $400. If you’re worried about assembling a computer, don’t worry… it’s definitely not as hard as you might think.
And, by building your own gaming PC, rather than buying it pre-built from a computer manufacturer, you will save a ton of money and ultimately get more bang for your buck.
For $400, the following parts are your best bet at building a very solid entry-level gaming computer.

No, it definitely isn’t the best CPU you can get, but considering that most games rely more on your video card, you really only need a CPU that is good enough.
And, in most scenarios, the FX-6300 is good enough to max out any game (assuming your video card is up to par.) There are some instances in more demanding games where the FX-6300 may bottleneck you, but even then turning down your settings to medium or lower will fix the problems.
Ultimately, the FX-6300, paired with the other components in this build, is good enough to have you maxing out most modern games on a 1920×1080 monitor.

However, while this motherboard will work perfectly with the FX-6300 that comes with this build, it should be noted that if you want to overclock the FX-6300, you will need to get a better motherboard. The AMD 970 chipset is not known for being very overclocking-friendly. If you do want to overclock, your better bet would be to get an AMD 990FX chipset motherboard.
Still, though, even without overclocking, the FX-6300 will give you plenty of processing power and will enable you to run most games (assuming your video card is up to par.) So, despite not being able to overclock to high levels, this motherboard is a great value.

It used to be that if you spent that much for a video card, you were looking at only being able to play modern games on mediumish settings.
Nowadays, though, a $100-$150 card will allow you to max out most modern games on a 1920×1080 monitor. That’s pretty incredible because that means you can build a ~$400 gaming PC and be able to play most games on higher settings.
The R7 370 in this build is very capable and, as mentioned above, will handle most games on higher settings. If you want to spend a little more, you might want to look at the GTX 950 as it outperforms the R7 370 in most games for just a little bit more.

While League of Legends will likely never need more than 4GB of RAM, if you want to branch out with this PC, having 8GB of RAM may be a better option.
And, fortunately, the upgrade to the Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB kit only cost you about ~$15 more. So, if you want to go with 8GB of RAM, you can definitely squeeze it into your budget.
But for now, I’ll just keep the 4GB kit up there and assume you’re mainly playing League of Legends.

One area on this build where I tried to save some money so I could put it into more important areas—like your CPU and video card—was in the hard drive.
Yes, a 1TB hard drive is pretty affordable nowadays and will only cost you about ~$25 more. However, the $25 was crucial in enabling you to a good enough video card to be able to max out most modern games.
And, the bad thing about spending more on your hard drive now is that if you want to upgrade your video card in the future, you have wasted the initial amount of the initial video card you purchased. But, on the other hand, you can always purchase a cheaper hard drive with less storage space and then add another hard drive or SSD later down the road. And, in that case, you don’t have to waste the money you paid for the initial hard drive as you can still use it.

While this gaming PC will deliver awesome performance for the price and will basically let you play any modern games on higher settings, it definitely won’t come in the best-looking case out there.
The Rosewill Dual Fans Micro-ATX case is about as plain-looking of a case as you can get. It’s also incredibly affordable. Coming in at just under $30, the Rosewill Dual Fans case will give you everything you need to house your components… which, in the end, is all you really need anyways.
I understand the desire to have a cool-looking case that you can show-off to your friends, but at this budget, if you spend too much money on your case you’re going to lose performance somewhere else.
So, ultimately, I think most would agree that it’s acceptable to sacrifice a cool-looking case for the ability to play any of today’s top games on higher settings.

Not only is it affordable, but it is considered to be a Tier 3 power supply according to the extensive and often updated Tom’s Hardware community.
While the Antec VP-450 power supply isn’t ideal for a high-end gaming rig or for overclocking, for a budget-oriented gaming computer build it will supply more than enough power to meet your needs.
However, if you plan on upgrading your video card in the future to one of the more high-end options available, you will likely need to upgrade your video card. But, for now, the Antec VP-450 will suit the needs of this build just fine.

GRAND TOTAL: $370-$430
John C. says
Get an AMD A-10 and use some of the money saved to get more fast memory. It has an R7 built in and is much more economical. It’s integrated R7 is also crossfire compatible, so you can add a second R7 when the funds allow.
Jack says
Hey, is there a cheaper GPU that’s around the R7 370’s level of performance, probably lower quality? Same as CPU, I’m on a budget but I still want to play League at a pretty good framerate.
Alex says
Get a RX 460, it should run a little slower but will still get high framerates in League.

Prolly around 200++ maybe… I can only run at 144fps medium settings on my laptop with using only nVidia Geforce GT 610M. Lol
