If you haven’t played League of Legends yet, then you’re missing out. I was a little late to the LOL bandwagon, but now that I have arrived I’m totally hooked.
This game is addicting, to say the least.
And, since I love to get other people hooked on the things that I am currently hooked on (why do you think I created this site?!!?!) I’d like to take the time to write a post on how you can get a solid computer for League of Legends for pretty cheap.
(Add me as your friend on LOL, and let’s go n00b pwning! My account name is BHale7. I call Fiora and top lane!)
Of course, you’re going to have to build your own system in order to get the most performance for the least amount of money… but with my complete computer-building guide, that should be a piece of cake. And, I know I say this a lot, but if you can operate a screwdriver and read, you are overqualified to build your own computer.
So, in this post I will give you a very affordable build ($400) that will easily max LOL out.

A $400 Computer for League of Legends That Will Have You Playing on Max Settings
[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B00IDG3NDY” cloaking=”default” height=”300″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NYzIQ7z7L.jpg” tag=”thowisguy-20″ width=”300″]Nobody likes to be the guy or girl who is stuck playing on the lowest settings. Fortunately, League of Legends is not a super graphics-demanding game. Therefore, you won’t have to spend a ton of money in order to enjoy playing it on the highest settings.
I’ve basically just pulled this build from the $400 computer (The Hornet) in my Builds section. So, if you want to go over there and check it out, or take a look at some of the more powerful systems, you can follow the link and do so.
The following is the part list that I recommend in order to build a gaming computer for League of Legends:
- CPU – AMD FX-6300 ([easyazon_link asin=”B009O7YORK” locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”gcgctest-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”yes”]View[/easyazon_link])

- Video Card – EVGA GeForce GTX 750 ([easyazon_link asin=”B00IDG3NDY” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”gcgctest-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”yes”]View[/easyazon_link])
- RAM – Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB ([easyazon_link asin=”B006WAGG14″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”gcgctest-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”yes”]View[/easyazon_link])
- HDD – Western Digital 250 GB ([easyazon_link asin=”B000Q84G5Q” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”gcgctest-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”yes”]View[/easyazon_link])
- Case – Rosewill Dual Fans ([easyazon_link asin=”B005LIDU5S” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”gcgctest-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”yes”]View[/easyazon_link])
- Power Supply – Antec VP-450 ([easyazon_link asin=”B004IZN3K2″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”gcgctest-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”yes”]View[/easyazon_link])
- Optical Drive – Samsung 24x SATA DVD RW ([easyazon_link asin=”B00CE58ZYC” locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”gcgctest-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”yes”]View[/easyazon_link])
Grand Total: $380-$420
(Prices fluctuate–check here for current pricing)
With a six-core AMD processor in this system and a GTX 750, this build is more than powerful enough to handle League of Legends on max settings.
It’s important to note that in order to to meet budget, I chose a bare hard drive. That means that you will only get the hard drive and nothing else. However, the SATA cables and mounting screws that you may or may not need (depending on what your motherboard comes with) can be had for under $10.
Also, if you don’t have an operating system that you can throw on this build, you will need to buy one. I recommend getting Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 if you don’t want to make the switch to 8. It will run you an additional $90.
Ultimately, if you’re looking to get a decent computer that will max out League of Legends and some other low-graphics-demanding games (Minecraft, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft, etc.) and you’re not looking to spend a ton of money, this build will do the trick.

Looking for Something Else?
In almost every scenario I recommend that gamers go with a desktop rather than choose a laptop for gaming. However, some gamers like to be able to game wherever they are, be it at their friends house, in the living room, in class, at Starbucks, at a LAN party, etc. If mobility is something that’s really important to you then I suppose getting a laptop would be acceptable. Just be prepared to pay more, and don’t expect as good of results.
If you’re looking for a solid gaming laptop, check out The Best Laptops for Gaming in 2013.

Now That You Have Your New Gaming Computer…
…it’s time to get down on some maxed out League of Legends awesomeness. As mentioned above, LOL is the only game I’m playing right now. So, if you’re as much of a fan of the game as I am and you want to play, add me on LOL… my account name is BHale7.

Hi Brent;
Just saw this i had already comment on budget gaming pc but this is more spefic so i’ll repost my question here, can i run League at max 1024×768 medium settings “40-60fps” no aa no shadows currently i’m playng at 800×600 windowed with those specs:
Athlon 5350
Asus AM1M-A
Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB DDR3 1600
Western Digital Caviar blue 500gb/1tb
Sooner or later i will add something like an r7 or a gtx 750 Ti,unfortunately for now i have a max bugdet of 200 € and in europe hardware cost a lot more
Thanks
Best Regards
Antonio
Brent Hale says
Hey Antonio, how’s it going? I’m not really sure what kind of performance you’d get on 1024×768 with that setup as that is a fairly dated resolution to be playing on. My guess is that it would play fine, but it’s tough to say.
Are you looking to buy a 1024×768 monitor? In my opinion, jumping from 800×600 to 1024×768 wouldn’t be worth it. I’d just wait until I could get a 1920×1080 monitor (they’re pretty cheap now) and spend 400 € or so on a budget build.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best,
Brent

Hey man, I just purchased and put together this computer as listed, however it can barely run LoL on the lowest settings. I don’t understand am I doing something wrong? By run I mean I get 103 ping in game however the movements of the character are very sketchy and glitch like.

Hey Luis, how’s it going?
For monitors, you can check these out:
BenQ VA LED GW2255 21.5-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor
Dell 8KVY2 19.5-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor (D2015H)
As for a keyboard, that can be subjective and vary from person to person. What is your budget for keyboards?

can the jackal $600 handle games like dayz arma 3 red orchestra 2
Brent Hale says
Hey Steven, how’s it going?
Yes, the Jackal can handle those games. However, games like DayZ and Arma 3 can be pretty demanding on the CPU when you’re in really populated areas, so you might have to turn down the settings a bit in those situations.
Or, if you can stretch the budget a bit, you can get a stronger CPU to accommodate for those situations. Either of these builds will incorporate a better Intel CPU:

Zack says
hey,
I was curious as to how this build will do with games such as like counter strike:go and possibly even dayz.
thanks,
zack
Brent Hale says
Hey Zack, how’s it going?
The build has been updated and is a little bit different than the parts listed above. (You can see the updated build by clicking on the “Build This Computer” button.)
With the updated build (which includes a GTX 750 Ti), you will easily be able to max out Counter Strike: GO, but you will probably have to settle for medium settings or so on DayZ.
But yes, it will play both of those games.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Jeff says
Hey Brent im a fan of your site :p I m looking to build a pc that will be able to play my game at max settings (mostly LoL) but also more graphics demanding games.
So i took one of your build and modified it adding what i think i need.
CPU – AMD FX-6300 (View)
Motherboard – ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS AM3+
Video Card – EVGA GeForce GTX760 SuperClocked w/EVGA ACX Cooler 2GB GDDR5 256bit
RAM – Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB (4GBx2)
HDD – Western Digital 250 GB (View)
Case – Rosewill Black SECC Steel USB 3.0 Mid Tower Computer Case Cases
Power Supply – XFX TS 550w Full Wired 80+ Bronze
Optical Drive – Samsung 24x SATA DVD RW
Can you tell me if it would work great together?
It is so hard to play high gold on league at 2-23 fps -.-
Ill add you on Lol thx :)
Jeff says
I also wanted to know with the new patch of the preseason (new map) will LoL be more graphics demanding? Will that build gonna be as efficient as before?
Brent Hale says
Hey Jeff, how’s it going?
Yep, that build will easily handle League as the FX-6300 and GTX 760 would even be considered overkill for the game.
I’m not up-to-date with the changes they’re making, but even if they do up the graphics, that build will still be more than powerful enough. So, either way you should be fine with that setup.
By the way, make sure you join the forums because we’re planning on holding a LoL tournament in December!
Luis says
Hey Brent, i started buying my new computer and its going great! I was wondering about this tournament and can i join? thank you Luis
Luis says
Hi Brent,
I am looking on getting this computer but it seems kind of old, will it still run LOL at 60fps+ on max settings? Thank You
Luis
Brent Hale says
Hey Luis, how’s it going?
Yes, this $400 build will run LOL on max settings pretty easily. As for being old, the video card (which has been updated to a GTX 750 Ti) is less than a year old and while the processor is a couple of years old, it still is more than powerful enough to play LOL.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

zahn says
Great blog, keep the work up :)
I was just wondering how much fps would you being looking to get with this build in the later patches in season 4.
I was also wondering if you would be able to do this build for us Australians and the round about price we would be expecting to pay?
Thank you for you time and a great build
Brent Hale says
Hey Zahn, I haven’t got a chance to check and see how this setup would perform with the new patches, but it should still max it out.
Also, the parts listed above aren’t updated, but if you click-through to Amazon, they are.
Using PCCaseGear.com, a similar Australian build would look like this:
CPU: AMD FX-6300 ($139)
MOBO: ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 ($79)
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 650 1GB ($129)
RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR3 1600 ($59)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB ($59)
CASE: SilverStone Precision PS08 ($49)
PSU: Antec Basiq VP-500P 500W ($69)
ODD: LG SATA DVD-RW ($22)
That comes out to about ~$610 Australian dollars. I’m sure you can mix and match, but I’m not very familiar with the Australian PC hardware market.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best,
Brent

Hi Brent I am new to the pc world and trying to build a good gaming pc that will run Minecraft at 60+ frames. If this build can run LOL on max it should be able to handle Minecraft right?
Jarred says
Hey Brent! Do you think you would be able to make a build for us Australians? My PC IS A RUST BUCKET to say the least and I would love to play League of Legends and Minecraft on Normal->Max settings. I’d prefer the parts to come from pccasegear.com but as long as it ships to Australia I will be happy. Thanks! (I say this because the Amazon.com parts don’t all ship to Australia) I also have never built a PC before if that plays a role.

Hey Brent,
Big fan of the Site! Inspired me to go ahead and build my first PC! But I do have a quick question. When I received my PSU (xfx atx 550) it came with what appears to be a Italian outlet plug? I was curious if there is a site where I can go ahead and order a new one or should I just go through the process of returning it to amazon and try ordering again.
Thanks, Ryan
Brent Hale says
That’s really weird! If you haven’t returned it yet, definitely do so.
Carl says
hey, i love the website and its very helpful but i have a few questions.
1. I am soon to be a college student and would this work for not only college but moderate gaming also?
2. Are there any other cases you could get for it? and if so what kind or a link would be helpful!
thank you!!
Brent Hale says
Hey Carl, how’s it going? Thanks for reading and commenting!
Yes, this setup will easily be able to handle your school work (unless you’re studying advanced computer engineering/software engineering or something where you need to use CAD software). For word processing, internet browsing, file storage, etc. this build will do just fine.
You can check these posts to get an idea of some different cases that you can use:
https://elitegamingcomputers.com/the-best-gaming-cases/
https://elitegamingcomputers.com/good-cheap-gaming-computers/#16
As a warning, though, with the holiday season going on, a lot of items are low in stock and so the prices are a lot higher than they normally are. They should return to normal after the first of the year.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best,
Brent

Hello Brent,
This is an amazing list of components. In a few words I’m a total noob with this kind of things but you explained it just excelent. Thanks for doing this.
I do have one question.
I’m really interested in playing League of Legends and also another game called TERA which demands a high capacity (greater than LOL i suppose).
What do you recomend to change in your list so I can play both of them?
Brent Hale says
Hey Javier, thanks for reading and commenting!
The build listed above (which I think is changed a little bit from what is listed above and I need to update it on here), will be powerful enough to play both games.
The build easily meets and exceeds all of the recommended requirements listed by TERA:
https://tera-support.enmasse.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/175/
So, you’ll be good to go with that build!
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Brent Hale says
Hey Jasher, thanks for stopping by.
That depends on what resolution you’re playing on. If you’ll be playing on a 1920×1080 monitor, then you could probably manage medium settings without shadows. High, probably not.
Although, if you’re playing on a lower resolution monitor, then you should be able to play on the higher settings with the integrated HD 8470D graphics.

Brent Hale says
Hey Jasher, the HD 4600 graphics on the i5-4430 should be enough to max League out on high settings, but you’ll have to turn the shadows down. But once again, it depends on the resolution of your monitor. If you’re playing on a 1920×1080 monitor you’re going to get lower FPS that if you’re playing on a 1600×900 monitor.

I’ve been playing league for a bout a year with a really crappy laptop that I can run with low settings with about 20 to 30 fps. It also takes me forever to load, like 5 minutes! It’s really horrendous. I’m a super console gamer, but love playing on a PC for Mobas and such.

Settings. And if not can this build be upgraded to play those games on max settings
Thanks!
Tyler
Brent Hale says
Hey Tyler! How’s it going?
Yeah, this build can play them on low settings. Crysis 3 will run on low and you may be able to get to mid settings for BF3. If you go with the $550 build on the Budget Builds section you’ll be able to max BF3 and Crysis 3 out as long as you don’t turn up the antialiasing up too high.

Brent Hale says
Hey Dhawal!
The Intel Core i3-3220 is the better processor. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a newer architecture motherboard for the i3-3220 for about $55, but you could always go with a B75 motherboard like this one:
MSI LGA1155/Intel B75/DDR3/SATA3 and USB 3.0/A and GbE/MicroATX Motherboard
Hope this helps!

How can this be played on League of Legends? How does it hold up in teamfights on the HIGHEST settings? What kind of Frames per Second do you get on average?
Thanks! :)
Brent Hale says
Hey Jasper! Thanks for stopping by!
This build will be able to max LOL out fine. With this build you can expect 60+ FPS on the highest settings throughout the game.
Check out this YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8sSKNMwE68
That person is recording LOL with a 6670 on max settings and is getting a solid 30 FPS. If he wasn’t recording he’d be getting a lot higher FPS. So, you can definitely max it out with the $400 build!

Hey Brent,
I have not played any games since Unreal Tournament years ago. I am am a huge fan of Walking Dead and wanted to play the game on my PC. My 5 year old PC will not play it. I want to upgrade my PC anyway and my gaming friends suggested I get an Alienware machine. I got sticker shock when I looked at the site. I found your site and I am going to build the Hornet.
I wanted to let you know I think you have a very cool website. Thank you for the information. I am in IT but to be honest I would have no clue what video card will work, what power supply, what motherboard, etc without breaking the bank. I also love that you keep updating the builds.
Keep up the good work.
Peace,
Tim
Brent Hale says
Hey Tim! Thanks for the comment!
From what I understand the Walking Dead game isn’t too graphics demanding. So, if you wanted to save some more money you could always just upgrade your current system. Here are the requirements for Walking Dead:

I appreciate the compliment and I’m glad the information on EGC could help you out. Let me know if you need anything else or if you have any other questions! I’ll be happy to help you out!

Aldo says
Hi Brent,
Great list of computer parts here, but there is just one problem for me. Because I live in Australia the shipping/postage is not available from the amazon links you posted. I have searched for the same or similar parts from Australian retailers but they all seem to be far more expensive then what was listed here. Does that mean that I will just have to build a less powerful computer because of my budget, and if so can you recommend anything? It doesn’t have to be too powerful because I will mainly be using it for playing Minecraft and other small-ish games.
Thanks for all your help!

Unfortunately, certain components cost a bit more in Australia when compared to what they would cost here in the United States. What is your total budget in Australian dollars? $400?? I can put a build together for you that will let you play Minecraft and other games that aren’t too demanding using pccasegear.com.
Just let me know your max budget and I’ll put something together for you!
All the Best,
Brent
